Whatever happened to romance?

I've started dating again. I've started dating in the most non-committal way possible. I'm dating online via Craigslist. Now, of all the online dating, I say this is the most non-committal because your ad is only up for 45 days, and you aren't required to put up a permanent profile. Hell, you can even put in an anonymous email address. The trouble with this is that you don't have a massive audience to choose from and if you are anonymous so are the people answering your ad.

I think I did fairly well. Three responses within a day. Number one was too young. Number two was recently separated, not divorced (kicked him to the curb, I said SINGLE men SINGLE) and then Number three, well number three was all right. Mostly what I asked for, he's shorter than I am used to (I haven't dated someone shorter than 6' since high school) but he made me laugh, and actually used spell check--OH and he didn't write his email as if he was auditioning to write Prince's liner notes.
So we went on a date--it constituted as a date because 1. I shaved. + 2. We went out for dinner and a movie (S.O.A.P) .+ 3. There was a kiss at the end.= Date.
And apparently I was charming enough to constitute a second date.

My dilemma. I am surprised that I decided to okay the kiss goodnight. Why? Well, I usually don't. But then again usually when I meet people from online for the first time, I have only talked to them on the phone once if at all. AND add to that they usually show up and are "sweaty guy" or "smelly guy" or "I work in IT and am afraid of bright non-fluorescent light guy". This guy, none of those.
The dilemma. How far do you go on the second date? What is expected? I've been out of the dating pool for about FOUR YEARS what is the protocol? If I watch TV (which I do) I would be led to believe that it is fully acceptable to go out with someone three times and then on the third date get completely hammered, redirect the cab to my apartment and let him spend the night.
What happened to courtship and romance? What happened to being dropped off at your front door and then kissing under the porchlight?
